In this recipe I use gravy packets. I use generic brands (or on the off occasion when the brand name is on sale for less than the generic) when I can and the flavor and quality of the gravy is consistently amazing! Use any brand of gravy you would like! 

For a delicious added zing, use a spoonful (like cereal spoon) of sour cream in the gravy. Its a level up! I do this on occasion. It just depends on what the taste buds are requesting!

I highly recommend that you take the mushrooms and onions and sauté/caramelize at the same time. A little secret is to use butter instead of oil for the sauté/caramelize. The quality of the mushrooms and onions is unmatched when you use butter! It helps to seal in the flavors and locking in those flavors is so, so important. Make sure to follow the directions carefully. Caramelizing the onions and sautéing the mushrooms with the cooked meatballs is the best way to synchronize flavors! 

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:  The meatballs and mushrooms can be served over mashed potatoes, rice or any kind of noodle. It is absolutely phenomenal over any of those starch options! Each brings a different texture, adds a unique twist and always works well with the gravy. I have had some suggestions to try this over oven roasted potatoes or baked potatoes. I haven't been able to try that yet, if you do, message me! I would love to know your thoughts!

SUGGESTED SIDES:

  • Oven Roasted Asparagus
  • Oven Roasted Broccoli
  • Cesar Salad
  • Vegetable Melody- Broccoli, Cauliflower and Carrots steamed
  • Mixed Vegetables- Corn, peas and diced carrots
  • Garden Salad
SUBSTITUTIONS
  • If homemade meatballs are not an option, you can always use the frozen precooked ones. If you do use this option, I would recommend warming them in either the air fryer or the oven. They will hold their shape better and not get too greasy.
  • The onion can be swapped for onion powder. If you do this, use 1.5 tbsp. 
  • Thyme and Rosemary can be substituted for nearly any herb or herb mix. It just depends on what flavors you are going for. Italian seasoning is a great one. In my Ultimate Meatball Guide, I recommend thyme and Italian seasoning. Its a beautiful classic flavor combination.
  • If you need to substitute the mushrooms, I would recommend avoiding the canned ones. they just take away quality. If I were in this situation I would omit the mushrooms. This one is pure opinion.
